Disney’s Tron is one of my top 10 movies of all time. Now, you might say “What the hell, it’s not that good” and you would be right. But that movie sparked my interest in computers and that led me into my IT career. And for that I will always be grateful.
The antagonist in Tron is the evil Master Control Program (MCP) and he (it) attempts to control the activities of all programs in the system. On a VAX/VMS system there is a program called Network Control Program (NCP) which is used to configure DECnet networking. VAX/VMS is (was) a wonderful operating system, years ahead of its time in some regards and I used it extensively in the early part of my IT career. I used to imagine that the computer in Tron ran on VAX/VMS and so the Master Control Program would managed by a command line program called MCP. And any messages it would generate would be in the VAX/VMS standard format.
With that in mind, here is how MCP would display the “end of line” message that is heard often in the movie.
